Horray Vacations, at least for my Kids

This will be my only entry this week because I am on vacation in the somewhat cooler San Diego. Currently I am quite exhausted after taking my second Kite Surfing Lesson. It was fun but my hands are shaking because of gusty winds where either the kite started to stall and when it finally grapped wind again it pulled you up out of the water. Nevertheless it was great fun and a two hour escape from my kids.

The rest of the vacation is more a management of two hungry lions. Both need there nap in the afternoon otherwise they will be grumpy all day long but that also means that it is   keep on reading here

The is no Fun in Fundamentalism

Yesterday evening I heard an interview on Fresh Air about Christians for Israel and how intelligent adults can believe in their own eminent death and can rejoice about it especially when they say they love their kids. I cannot understand any fundamentalist (here I used the Christains faith) because they believe that God spoke once and that whatever we know about what he said, the bible, is true through and through. But the bible is 2000 years old an  keep on reading here

Did you say Team Building Event?

Yesterday I was dragged into a Team Building Event and after trying to go along with it I finally escaped by running away. The whole thing started so innocent when we got an email about a department picnic. But right from the start I was suspecting something fishy because it was talking about team building efforts. When I hear team building events then I start thinking about running over burning coals or doing other stupid stunts. But this time it should get worse.

The day of this event I was still not quite sure but some co-workers tried to convince me and finally I  keep on reading here

Public Radio Gone Bad?

Me and my wife believe in public radio and support three of them with a membership. On each of these memberships we pay more than we pay for HBO throughout the year. This despite the fact that we cannot receive them through radio from our home. This also means that when I drive home around 3/4 along the way the reception gets bad to the point where I have to switch it off. So I though that Podcasting as KCRW is doing it would save me. One of the shows I am most interested in is keep on reading here

(Review) LA-JUG Meeting September 2006

The September meeting of the LA-JUG was another great one. Joshua Marinacci and Richard Bair were giving a presentation about Java Desktop User Interface Development or short about Swing. I was working with Swing on and off, the latest on the open-source project jPodder, and all the time I did not love the basic UI. Especially jPodder showed too much data and on the other hand it is butt ugly to look at. Podcasting clients are not really rocket science and so its UI could look simple but sexy. The first dem  keep on reading here

I Robot

Since a while our oldest son, 4 years old, gives us some problems because he has such a short attention span, cannot focus on a particular task and jumps from one topic to another constantly. On the other hand one thing I can remember from my early childhood is that there was no hobby or other fun activity I could share with my dad. He was a farmer which is in itself already a fulltime job but then he also was a parttime politician in the city council. Therefor I said to myself that I will look for a hobby I can share with each of my kids.

Last Friday in a Fry's I saw the keep on reading here

Recklessness is not a Virtue

I hat nothing more on news than when idiots or reckless people get treated like heros. If some tries to proof his manhood by jumping on the back of wild animals making them look like circus animals does not get any admiration from me. I think such behavior is exploiting the animals to get fame and fortune. Sooner or later such people will run out of luck and get harmed or killed in such stunts the news are making them look like as they have did in the line of duty. What a mad world.

Sorry guys but I will not have pity with such idiots. They were seeking the danger and so they dese  keep on reading here

Emprex DVD Recorders Failed Me On Linux

From time to time it is necessary to cut your losses and try meaning here buying something new. Both my web as well as the MythTV server are equipped with Emprex DVD Recorders (16x E-IDE) and from time to time I ran into failed burns or other strange behavior in SuSE. Now when I started to burn DVDs I ran into many failed burns meaning that I could throw away that costar afterwards. Even an firmware upgrade by unplugging it from the Linux box and hooking it into a Windows box to run the firmware upgrade did not do the trick actually it made it even worse. Finally I decided to give up on th  keep on reading here
